Abstract. An area of 11 counties in southwestern Indiana was studied because (1) the subsurface geology of the Salem Limestone and associated rocks in the area contained numerous correlation discrepancies; (2) it was the locus of recent oil exploration and oil discoveries in these rocks; (3) the last subsurface study of this rock section was made in ; and (4) since that time, subsurface. per township, that penetrate Mississippian- and Mesozoic-age rocks. In the Manitoba portion of the project area, geophysical logs from subsurface wells and outcrop locations and stratigraphic test holes were used for this project; of those subsurface wells had Paleozoic formation picks made or.

Chert associated with clinoforms has been recognized in logs and in cuttings and have been interpreted to be responsible for some of the best seismic markers seen in Mississippian successions (Chatellier ).

The Mississippian is a subperiod in the geologic timescale or a subsystem of the geologic record. It is the earliest/lowermost of two subperiods of the Carboniferous period lasting from roughly ± to ± million years ago. Inthe Pembina oilfield was discovered about km (70 mi.) southwest of Edmonton.

This field, the largest stratigraphic oil trap in western Canada (with the exception of the oil sands of the McMurray Formation), quickly surpassed all others and became Alberta’s largest oilfield, both in terms of estimated reserves and actual production. West Pembina injects new life into Alberta’s oil sector.

In OctoberChevron Oil opens the West Pembina oil field. It is the largest discovery in ten years and revives hopes for Alberta’s oil sector, which had been suffering from a lack of new discoveries over the previous decade.
